Speculationsaboutartisticdepictionsofmedicalentitieshavebeen
anongoingpastimeamongphysicians.Suchrepresentationshavebeenusedas
thebasesforhypothesesaboutpastincidence,theplaceofhandicapped
individualsinasociety,andtheevolutionofmodernconceptsofpathogenesis.
Researchersnoticetherelationshipbetweenpaintingsandgeneticdisease.Some
conditionshavebeenseenwithhighfrequently(suchasDownsyndrome),
whereasothershaverarelybeennoted[1,2].Paintingsquitefrequentlydepicted
medicalanomaliesanddisorders,includinggeneticoneswhetherclearly
recognizedassuchornotbytheartistsconcerned[3].Certainwell-defined
congenitalmalformationsandgeneticdisorderscanbeidentifiedinpaintings
throughouttheages.Portraitsofanartisthim/herself,orofothers,may
intentionallyorunwillinglydocumentacongenitalabnormalityorgenetic
disorderinthesubject.Suchworksofartprovideafascinatingstudyforthose
withinterestsinthefieldaswellaswideningourenjoymentofpaintings
ingeneral[4,5].
Ourworkisfocusedondiseases(particularlygeneticdiseases)present
inpaintings.Wehavechosenandcreatedthelistofgeneticdiseaseswhichwere
actuallydepictedinpaintings.Butwehavetorememberthatthespecific
diagnosisisoftennotcertain.
