segmentedbeads,andmeasure5.1-6.3mmindi-
ameterand5.8-9.8mminlength.Similarbeads
canbeobservedamongthendsfromKaranog
(Silverman1997:302-303andPENNInv.E7925)
andMirmadtombT.75(MAN1980.96.422.160).
Alargetaperedcylindertranslucentgreen
bead(SNM04)fromaMeroiticgraveisasyetun-
paralleled.

Somebeadsseemtobepinched-oHofdrawn
tubesratherthansegmentedinmoldsasinthe
caseofalongellipsoidblackbeadfromaMeroitic
graveatSedeinga(SNM03)[Pl.7.2].
Anamberbead(SJE65)featureselongated
endsthatmightbeevidenceofpinchingitfrom
atube.ThesamplewasfoundinaMeroiticgrave.
Twosimilarbeadswererecordedfrompost-
MeroiticgraveT.21atMirmad(MAN1980.96.176).
4.2.1.2MONOCHROMEWITHAPPLIED
MOSAICDECORATION
AwhitebeadbodywaspinchedoHfromadrawn
tubeanddecoratedwithmosaiceyesinblueand
white(SNM38).Anotherdarkbluebeadbodywas
decoratedwithmosaiceyesinwhite,black,white,
red(SNM39).Thesebeadsareratherlarge,measur-
ingabout8mmindiameterand7mminlength.
TheywerefoundinaMeroiticgraveattheBerber
cemeterydatedbetweenthe1stcenturyBCandthe
3rdcenturyAD[Pl.20.2](BashirandDavid2015).
4.2.1.3STRIPED
Asmallglobularbeadwasasegmentofadrawn
darkpurpletubedecoratedwithvewhitelon-
gitudinalstripes(MAP23).Itcomesfromagrave
datedtothelateMeroitictopost-Meroiticpe-
riod.Smalldrawnandsegmentedstripedbeads
havebeendiscoveredinotherMeroiticandearly
Romancontexts.Theyhavebeenrecordedfrom
assemblagesintombQ427atQustul(Williams
1991a/I:124;1991a/II:82-83,OIME21544,per-
sonalobservation)andtombT.98atNagShayeg
(e.g.,MAN1980.93.160)[Pl.8.1].Asmalldouble-
segmentbeadwasfoundinanearlyRomanas-
semblageatBerenike(Zych2011:146,Cat.71c,Fig.
12-68,late1sttoearly2ndcenturyAD).
Alargeglobularblackbead,mostlikelydrawn,
exhibitssixlongitudinalwhitestripes(SNM12).
Althoughithasroughends,tracesoftheseg-
mentedportionarepreservedthere.Itcomesfrom
aMeroiticgraveatSedeinga.Noparallelcouldbe
tracedsofar.

Compoundbeadsconsistoftwolayersortwoglass
tubes.Inthelattercase,asmallertubeissetinto
thelargerone.Examplesfromthestudiedcollec-
tionsarepresentedbelow.

Smallcompoundbeadscanbebichrome:translu-
centred-on-colorless(SJE41,SNM50)andopaque
red-on-colorless(SJE56,MAP08,SNM51),color-
less-on-red(SJE71A,SJE71B),yellow-on-colorless
(MAP15),green-on-yellow(SNM31),green-on-
white(SNM05).Theyarelessthan5mmindi-
ameter.Oneofthesamplesabove(SJE56)issaid
tohavebeenfoundinapost-Meroiticgrave.How-
ever,liketwoothersamples(SJE58,SJE59),they
areusuallyfoundinMeroiticcontexts.
Red-on-colorlesscompoundglassbeadshave
beenfoundinearlyRomancontextsattheRed
SeaportsiteofBerenike(Zych2011:Cat.72,Fig.
12-69;Then-Obłuska2015b:Fig.4.18)andat1st-
to-3rd-centuryADMeroiticburialsites(Then-
Obłuska2015a:Fig.13:S041/l,Sedeinga;2016c,

Abka;BMCT33-256andBMCT32-255/8,Ber-
ber)[Pl.8.2].Yellow-on-colorlessglassbeads
