alsocanhaveproblemseveninlow-paidormiddle-paidjobs,sincetheyrequire
moreandmoredigitalskillsasmostprofessionsareshifingintodigitalopera-
tionstoagreaterandgreaterextent(forexample,intheeducationalindustry
orrestaurantindustry).
Ifwetakealookatthenumberofpeoplewhowillneedre-skilling(100mil-
lion)inonly8advancedeconomies,itlooksobviousthattraditionalroutesof
campusofinestudiesarenotanoptionforthemassesofpeople.Moreandmore
employerstakeouttherequirementofthedegreeinthehiringprocess,putting
morefocusonskillsetofthecandidates.Amongstcompanieswhichdroppedthe
degreerequirementwecannameTesla,Google,HiltonHotelsorIBM.8Whilethe
degreescandisappearfrom“must-have”requirementsfromthecompanies,the
newtypeofcredentialswillbeevolving.Anotherimportantaspectofupskilling
ofmassesofpeopleisthequestionofwhichapproachtoapplywithreference
totrainingandeducatingofpeoplewhoarebeginningtheirjourneyfromlow-
skilledworkforcetowardshigh-skilledworkers.Terearemanyvariouswaysof
upskillingthesegroupsofpeopleandinthisbook,Iwilldiscussthemarketof
non-standardeducationalapproachestoeducationandtraininginprograming
educationandcomputerstudies.Tesenon-standardeducationalapproachesare
especiallyimportantforpeoplewhoarecomingfromdisadvantagedbackgrounds
withalimitedaccesstostandardon-campuseducation.Whiletheremightbe
manygroupswhocanbeclassifiedasdisadvantaged,includingdisabled,NEETs,
domesticviolencevictims,formerprisoninmates,formerdrugandalcohol-
addicts,peoplefrompoverty-strickensocio-economicbackgrounds,immigrants,
asylumseekersandinmanycountriesalsopeopleofcolor,womenormi-
norities.Mostofthesegroupshavelimitedaccesstothetechindustrywhichis
predominantlywhiteandmale.Tediversityintechisaglobalproblemandcan
beperceivedbothasapipelineandendpointproblem.9Ifweassumethatpeople
whowanttoshiffromthelow-skilljobsaremostlypeoplefromdisadvantaged
backgrounds,wehavetorealizethatsuchatransitionwillneednon-standard
educationalapproaches.Itisnotbecauseoflowereducationalattainmentofsuch
groups(whichisofenthecaseduetolesseropportunities),butalsobecauseof
theeverydaydimcultyinaccessingstationaryon-campuseducation.Ifyouenroll
