ofthefundamentalbiologicalprocessesandelementsofthefunctions
ofanylifewouldappeartoholdasinequanonstatusintheconception
ofanymeaningfulhumanrightsprotectionmechanism.Asdulynoted
bymomasHobbes,JohnLocke,andJean-JacquesRousseautoname
butafewitwasessentiallythisdesiretoensuretheprotectionofthe
foundationsuponwhichallhumanexistenceisbased,whichwasulti-
matelythedrivingforcebehindtheSocialContractand,consequently,
thecreationoftheState5.

salDeclarationofHumanRights.InthisAct,theUnitedNationsclearly
stressedthatthe:Krecognitionoftheinherentdignityandtheequaland
inalienablerightsofallmembersofthehumanfamilyisthefoundation
offreedom,justiceandpeaceintheworld”6.

lifeisappositeatthispoint,inasmuchasitisthiscontextwhichdeter-
minesthewayinwhichthetermKeveryone”istobeunderstoodwhenit
surfacesintreatises;onceagain,itisahistoricalcontextwhichprovides
animportantinsightallowingustobegintocomprehendatwhichexact,
initialmoment,lawsinregardtotheprotectionofhumanlifeshould
bebroughtintoforce.InmeUniversalDeclarationofHumanRights,
