Aschematicofthehydrokineticclutchandhydrokineticgearboxisshown
inFigure1.Thehydrokineticclutch(Fig.1a)consistsofapumprotor(1)driven
bytheengineandaturbinerotor(2)connectedtotheinputshaftofthegearbox.
Thepumpandturbinerotorsareenclosedinacommonhousinglledwithwork-
ingfluid.Inhydrokineticclutches,thereisnodirectconnectionbetweentheinput
shaftandtheoutputshaftoftheclutch.Whentheenginestartstorunandrotate
thepumpimpeller(1)theresultingcentrifugalforcecausestheoiltoreachthe
turbineblades(2).Theoppositeorientationofthepumpvaneswithrespecttothe
enginevanesallowsaverysmoothtorquetransferbetweenthecrankshaftandthe
gearbox.Thecharacteristicvortexmotionoftheuidiscausedbythedifference
inspeedofthepumpandturbineoperation.Torquetransferisthereforedependent
onthespeedoftheliquidvortex-thegreaterthespeedandforcewithwhichthe
liquidactsontheturbine,thegreaterthetorquetransferred.
