Greeksparty.Inthefaceofadeepeconomiccrisis,severalyearsofrecession
andthethreatofbankruptcyofthestateafter2008,boththepoliticalpowers
tookatoughstanceagainstausterityandfinancialcuts,whichthecabinets
ofthesocialistPASOKpartyandtheconservativeNewDemocracypartyhad
subscribedto.
FromamongthestatesofsouthernEurope,whichaccordingtoHunting-
ton’sthirdwaveofdemocracycreatedaconsolidateddemocraticsystem,itwas
Greecethatwashithardestwiththeeffectsoftheeconomiccrisisof2008.It
alsohadthebiggesteffectonthefunctioningofitspoliticalsystemthatwas
establishedonthebasisoftheconstitutionof1975.Onlyforeignfinancialas-
sistancekeptGreecefromformallydeclaringbankruptcy,however,thepriceto
payforthesubsequentbailouts(in2010,2012,and2015)meantevenfurther
relinquishmentofitspower(thanthatprovidedsolelybymembershipintheEU)
tomakedecisionsconcerningitseconomy.Eachconsecutivebailoutinvolved
theneedtointroducespecificstructuralreforms,controltheirimplementation,
andwasburdenedwiththeriskofitbeingsuspendedbythenowdefunctTroika,
thatis,theInternationalMonetaryFund,theEuropeanCommission,andtheEu-
ropeanCentralBank.Notevenareferendumcarriedouton5July2015which
rejectedtheconsecutiveboundtransaction(financialassistanceinexchangefor
furtherreformsandcuts),includingathreatofaso-calledGrexit(i.e.Greece’s
withdrawalfromtheeuroarea),considerablyinfluencedtheconditionsofthe
subsequentbailout.Inthissituation,theparliamentwasforcedtoacceptthe
proposedbailoutpackagewithallitsconsequenceswithin48hourswithout
conductingalongerdebateintheHouseofDeputies.Aresearchhypothesis
wasdrawnfromtheseeventsstatingthatadeepeningeconomiccrisisandthe
needtopursuefurtherfinancialassistanceledthepoliticalinstitutionsofthe
Greekstatetorelinquishevenmoreofitssovereigntytointernationalorgani-
sationsandresultedinthefurtherradicalisationofpublicsentimentandthe
strengtheningofextremeparties.Inordertoverifythishypothesis,adecision
wasmadetofirstverifythevalidityofmoredetailedresearchassumptions.Sev-
eralessentialissueswereconsidered.Firstly,thefollowingquestionwasposed:
TowhatdegreedidtheconsecutivefinancialbankruptciesinGreeceafterit
hadgainedindependencein1830influencedthecurrentpoliticalsituationin
thestate?Itwasthenassumedthatthelackofstrongstatehoodinasituation
whereGreece“enteredthemoderneraasaprovinceoftheOttomanEmpire,
inwhichthestateeliteswererecruitedtoworkforaforeignpowerlacking
legitimacy,”24contributedtoalackofastrongtraditionofcivilsociety.Ac-
