herreflectionsaboutmemorythatinspiredustoact.
ProfessorBarbaraSkarga,whoherselfexperiencedthe
hardshipofwar,thelotofanexileandprisonerofthe
Sovietcamps,reflectsonthestructureofmemory:“For
memory,problemsarenotsomuchimportantasare
experiencesandevents(…)”,2Shecomparesmemory
toanarchivethatisadisorderlycollection:containsboth
beautifully-illustratedmanuscripts,aswellastrifles,
fleetingfacts,documents,sounds,alsomemoriesofpain,
joy,experiences.
“Events,moods,experiencesfilltheshelvesofthe
archivewithoutanyorderandwhatismore
importantwithoutchronology(…).Irunalongthese
shelves,sometimesIfindsomethingsignificantthat
Ihaveforgotten,sometimessomebodyelsereminds
meaboutsomethingorcorrectsmymemories”.3
Thebookwearepresentingyouresemblesthearchive
describedabove,inwhichmemoriesofexperiencesand
eventsbecomeinterspersedwithacademicorder,
documentsandphotographswithlettersandfragments
ofprose,allofwhichservestofindmemoryofthosedays
inthis“lackoforder”,andretainitinthepresent.

aretiredlecturerandateacherofPersianwhohad
workedformanyyearsattheUniversityofWarsaw,
anauthorofacademicpapersandtranslationsofthe
Persianliterature.WhenIwasinvitingDoctorZofia
Józefowicz-Niedźwieckatotheseminar,whatasurprise
itwasformetolearnfromherthatshecouldnotmiss
theopportunitytoparticipateintheseminarasthose
