Tecomputerizationoflegalturnover,legaldrafingandtheapplicationof

lawisgraduallymakingthemdependentoninformationtechnology.Tis

justiﬁestheimportanceofanumberofconsiderationsconcerningthetech-

nologicaldimensionoflegalpractice.Giventhepotentialbeneﬁtsandrisks

associatedwiththeprogressivedigitalizationandcomputerizationoflegis-

lationandthegrowingimportanceoftheInternet,theissueoftheroleand

usesofinformationsystemsinthelegaldomainrequirescareful,multi-di-

mensionalanalysis.

Teimpactofinformationtechnologyonlawisstillanopenquestion.

However,thereisnodoubtthatthesetechnologiesarechangingthewayin

whichlawiscreated,communicated,appliedandinterpreted,sincetheypro-

videnewwaysofsharing,searching,communicatingandanalyzinglegalin-

formation.Communicationimposesonhumanpracticesand,inparticular

onlegalpractices,manyspeciﬁcrequirementsandrestrictions.Terefore,

theimplementationofnewtechnologiesintocommunicationprocessescan

notonlyhelptoovercomesometraditionalproblems,suchasallowing,for

instance,theimprovementofexistingpractices,butitmayalsocausenew

problemsormakeoldonesevengraver.Forexample,thedevelopmentof

informationtechnologiesmayresultinthecreationofnewgoodsandservi-

ces,ormaychangethescopeortheﬁeldofapplicationoftraditionalones.It

makesnewrisksappear,requiringthereinterpretationofexistingrulesorthe

introductionofnewregulations.However,theneedforthereinterpretation

ofexistinglawinfringesuponitscertaintyandtheintroductionofnewregu-

lationsiscostlyandcomplicated.Moreover,inaccurateregulationmayhave

farreachingconsequencesbothforlegalsystemsandexistingorfuturesocial

practices.Tus,onecanarguethatlaw,informationtechnologiesandsocial

practicesareincreasinglymutuallydependent.Terefore,understandingthe

causes,trendsandsigniﬁcanceofthechangesresultingfromtheimplemen-

tationofinformationtechnologyinprocessesrelatedtothecreationandap-
