Tebeginningsofthetechniquerelatedtotheexcitationofplasmausing
lasertechniquesdatebacktothe1960s,anditsdevelopmentwasobserved
shortlyafertheinventionofthepulserubylaser.Teyear1963isconsidered
tobethebirthoflaser-inducedplasmaspectroscopy,andsincethenthere
hasbeenanintensivedevelopmentofthemethod.Inthefieldofminingand
geology,oneofthemostimportantachievementswere:in1989,theuseof
themethodforthedetectionofmetalsinsoil,in1992,thefirstattemptsto
performLIBSresearchinspaceapplications,andin2000,theintroduction
ofacommercialdeviceforcarboncompositionanalysis7.Tegreatinterest
inthemethodleadstoitsincreasinglywiderapplicationinvariousfields,
includingindustry.Currently,thankstotheLIBStechnique,itispossibleto
determinethechemicalcompositionofe.g.environmental,metallurgical,
metallic,andnon-metallicsamples8,plastics,sewagesludge,liquids,aero-
sols,gases,biologicalsamples,andmuchmore9.Temethodisalsousedin
thestudyofthestratigraphyofsurfacelayers,theanalysisofthechemical
compositionofmetalliccoatingsandtheirthickness10,butalsointheanal-
ysisofaggregatemineralogy11,andinthesearchformineralsandrocks12.
InPoland,themethodofLaser-InducedPlasmaSpectroscopy(LIBS)is
notpopular.Inthevastmajorityofcases,theanalysisofthechemicalcom-
positionofrockandmineralsamplesisperformedusinganalyticalmethods,
