participation:engagement,involvement,sharedresponsibility,participation
indecisionprocesses,indemocratizationandsociallearningprocess;roleasstake-
holders,communicatingproblemsandopinions;scienceliteracycontributes
toinformalscienceeducation;
co-shapinginnovations:evaluatingambivalentefectsofnewtechnologies,their
outcomes,distributionofcostsandefects,introducinglong-term(generational)
issues;influencingpoliticsandlegislators.
Socitizensandtheirgroupsandassociationscancontribute-viatheirinnovative
eforts-toknowledgeproduction,andinnovation;todevelopingrelationsbetweengov-
ernment,businessandcivilsociety;toevaluatingefectsofinnovations(especiallysocial
andenvironmental)inthelongrun.
Fromthepointofviewofnecessaryanddesirableinnovationsleadingtosustainability,
theycanbeformedinafewexemplaryareas:
inmentality,worldview,researchapproachesandmethodologies,cultures,educa-
tion,mediacoverageofsustainability(especiallyvitalinR&Dsector,education,
media);
innovationsinpublicunderstandingofscienceandtechnologyandtheirtrans-
formativerole(especiallyimportantinlessadvancedcountries,andparadoxically
inleadingonesproducingcutting-edgetechnologies);
innovationsincitizens’engagement,involvementandparticipation(fundamental
fordemocraticdevelopmentandfordemocratizinginnovation-seevonHippel,
2005);
efortsandactivitiestomakecitizensactiveinfuturethinking(long-termvision-
ing,foresight,forecasting,scenarios)andevaluativeprocessesandprocedures
(e.g.technologyassessment,socialimpactassessment,environmentalimpact
assessment).
Alloftheseareasandkindsofinnovativeactivitiescanbeprofiledtowardssustaina-
bility;together,theycreateacultureofinnovativenessdesirablebothforinnovationsperse
andforsustainabilitythatcontainorientedgoalsandsocialchoices,actions,andpractices
(“goodenvironmentalpractices”included).Innovativesocietyisatermsometimesused
todescribeasocietywhereinnovativeattitudesandactivitiesaremassiveandcommon.
Sustainabilitycanbethentreatedasanormativeguidingprinciple.
