Asaresult,onlyslightlymorethanonethirdofthestudentscompleting
first-andsecond-yearstudiesintheacademicyear2015/2016indicated
thattheyfeltpreparedtopursueacareerintheteachingprofession.Inthe
students’opinion,changesintheprocessoftrainingteachercandidates
areneeded,especiallythefollowing:
anextensionofpracticalclasseswithacorrespondingreductionof
theoreticalclasses(accordingto31.5%ofthestudents),
anorientationofstudyprogramstowardgainingpracticalskills(28.0%),
animprovementinpsychologicalpreparation(14.0%),
apedagogicalorientationtoworkinschool(14.0%),and
thesupportofpractitionersbothintheclassroomandatuniversity
(9.4%;ibidem,p.8).

Earlyschooleducatorsandacademicsworkinginthisfieldhaveexperiencedall
theconsequencesofmass,wideopenblockedearlieropportunitiesforacademic
educationanditsmarketing(see,forexample,Zbróg,2014,pp.37-40).Trough-
outtheperiodofrapidgrowthinthenumberofstudentsinPolishhighereduca-
tioninstitutions,earlyschooleducationandpre-primaryeducationwereamong
themostpopularareasofstudy.TeobjectionsraisedintheNIKreportonthe
qualityofteachereducationaretheresultof,amongotherthings,universalaccess
topedagogicalstudies.Recentproposalsforchangehavereferredprimarilyto
areductionintheenrollmentinteachereducationandmonitoringthenumberof
graduates.Urgentrevisionsarerequiredintheeducationalstandardsforprepara-
tionfortheteachingprofession,mostimportantly,anincreaseinthenumberof
hoursofpracticalstudyrequiredforthefirstdegree.Teseproposals,whichare
characteristicofthegovernmentreport,addressverygeneralissuesandignore
theessenceofteachereducationanditsadaptationtothechangingworld.Today’s
(higher)schoolsmustmakeaclearshiftoeducationinordertohelpyoungpeo-
pleunderstandandselecttheirvalues,developtheirlearningskills,actasmem-
bersofthecommunity,andshapethefuturebasedonthesustainablevaluesof
democracy,cooperation,interdependence,andsolidarity.Whattypeofteacher
