Themainaimofthearticleistopresentthelinguisticimageofsapphireintheworksof
JuliuszSłowacki(PismaJuliuszaSłowackiego,t.1-4,Lwów1880).Intheconsiderations,an
attemptwasmadetodeterminewhetherthepoetusedwordconnectionsfixedinthecon-
sciousnessoflanguageusers,orwhetherhewasgoingbeyondthecanonoftheliterary
andculturalcodeoftheRomanticperiodintermsofusingthenamesofpreciousstones.
Thesketchhighlightstheconnectivityofthelexemeszafir[sapphire]withotherwords,its
etymology,contextualentanglementsandsymbolism.Theresearchusedtheassumptions
oftheopendefinition.Theproposedanalyzesshowthatthelinguisticimageofsapphire
presentinselectedworksbySłowackiconsistsprimarilyoftextualconceptualizations,
whichareanextensionofthefeaturesestablishedinthegenerallanguage,butitisnot
obviousthroughtheuseofperiphrases-discussionsorfigurativeconnections.Thepoet
oftenbreakswiththeimagesfixedinthemindsoflanguageusers-thesapphiresky,the
sea,theeyesgetanewlook.Moreover,theindividualexamplesdiscussedcompletethe
linguisticimageofsapphire,thuscharacterizingSłowacki'sidiolect.
