icateexaminations.TeunitsinvolvedinthisendeavourincludetheUniversity
CouncilfortheCertificationofLanguageProficiencyestablishedbyResolution
119oftheUniversityofWarsawSenateof17June2009andtheSchoolforFor-
eignLanguageTeachingattheUniversityofWarsaw,supportedbytheOfce
oftheRector)sPlenipotentiaryfortheimplementationoftheBolognaProcess
andtheorganizationofforeignlanguageteaching.Itwasontheirinitiativethat
theinternationalconferenceuCompetencesofthe21stcentury:certificationof
languageproficiency”wasorganisedinWarsawon9th-10thMay2018.Teaim
oftheconferencewastoprovideavenuefortheexchangeoftheoreticalconcepts
andexperiencesinconstructingandadministeringexaminationsinvariousPol-
ishandforeignuniversitycontexts.Teconference,whichhasgivenrisetothis
volume,showedhowimportantitistocross-referencereflectionandpracticein
theareaofforeignlanguagecertification.Teeventinspiredvaluableresearch
andanalyses,andsensitizedtestauthors,examinersandthoseresponsiblefor
testdesignandadministrationtoanumberofissuesthatcontributetothe
reliableandaccurateimplementationofthelanguageproficiencycertification
process.Tisseemstobeparticularlyimportantatatimewhentheectsof
thisprocessareundoubtedlysignificantbothfortheparticipantsthemselvesand
forthecertifyinginstitution.
Tevolume,withpapersinbothEnglishandPolish,isdividedintove
thematicpartscoveringvariousaspectsoflanguagecertification.Terstpart
offourchaptersbyPolishandforeignscholarsfocussesontheoreticalconsid-
erationsunderpinninglanguageproficiencyassessment.Itopenswithapaper
