Yetcontroversybasedontheblackandwhitevisionofmethodologyshould
notgoonforever;atsomepointpossibilitiestondthebestfunctionandcon-
textforeachparadigmshouldbesoughtandfound.Tisiswhathappenedin
thewarofthequantitativeandqualitativeresearchparadigmswithtriangulation
andmixedmethodsnowwellinstalledinempiricalprojects.Tisisalsowhat
happenedinthecontroversyoversummativeandformativeevaluationinthe
eldofeducationingeneralandintheareaofFLT/SLAinparticular.
Formative/qualitativeassessment,focusedontheprocessandsupporting
studentlearning,hasbeenfoundtobeofagreatvalueforpre-andpost-certi-
cationaswellasforinformalcontexts.Summative/quantitativeassessment,
focusedontheproduct,istypicallyusedforcertificationproperwhichnaturally
takesplaceinformalcontexts.Bothtypesarenolongerconsideredmutually
exclusiveandtheirintegrationbenefitsbothteachersandstudents,butec-
tiveuseofevaluationandassessmentcallsforraisingawarenessonthepartof
educationaladministrationandeventuallydependsonthequalityofpre-and
in-serviceteachereducation.
