Summary
mearticlepresentsthehistoryofthemilitaryhighereducationsystem,whichisconnected
totheshapingofthePolishstatehoodaswellasitspresentstate.mestructureofthistypeof
educationsystemwasdependentontheeńectivenessofsocio-economic,politicalandmilitary
activitiesofpublicauthorities.However,itisonlytheNovemberUprisingwhichisgenerally
associatedwiththerevoltoftheo|cersfromtheO|cerCadetsSchool[SzkołaPodchorążych]
inWarsaw.
ItwasonlyańerPolandregainedindependencein1918thatthemilitaryeducation
systemcouldbegintodevelop.Intheinterwarperiodthefollowingschoolswereestablished:
theO|cersNavalSchool[OficerskaSzkołaMarynarkiWojennej]inToruń-1October1922
(since1928theO|cerCadetsNavalSchool[SzkołaPodchorążychMarynarkiWojennej]),the
O|cersAirForceSchool[OficerskaSzkołaLotnictwa]inGrudziądz-November1925,the
HigherSchoolofEngineering[WyższaSzkołaInżynierii]inWarsaw-in1936(since1939the
MilitaryMainSchoolofEngineering[WojskowaSzkołaGłównaInżynierii]).
DuringWorldWarIItheonlyschoolinexistencewastheO|cerCadetsNavalSchool
[SzkołaPodchorążychMarynarkiWojennej].Ańer1946theO|cersNavalSchool[Oficerska
SzkołaMarynarkiWojennej]wasthefirstonetostartoperating.Reformswereinitiatedbythe
Act“OntheMilitaryhighereducation”of31March1965.However,itwasnotuntil1967that
allo|cerschoolsweregrantedthestatusofhighereducationinstitutions,includingacademic
ones.Itconcernedoverall45o|cerschoolsand11militaryacademieswhichexistedinPoland
intheyears1946-1967.
meabovementionedActimposedessentialchanges.Since1968thenumberofmilitary
schoolsandacademieshassystematicallydecreased.misstateofańairscontinuedalsointothe
1980s.merewere13vocationalhighereducationinstitutionsand3academiconesinPoland
atthattime.meywerenotincludedinthenationalsystemofhighereducation.However,it
wasonlytheMilitaryUniversityofTechnology[WojskowaAkademiaTechniczna],thePolish
NavalUniversity[WyższaSzkołaMarynarkiWojennej](since1987thePolishNavalAcademy
[AkademiaMarynarkiWojennej])andthePolitical-MilitaryAcademy[WojskowaAkademia
Polityczna]thatconferreddegreesrecognizedbytheciviladministration.
Inthe1990stheprocessofreductionofarmedforceswasbegunandatthesametime
anumberofmilitaryhighereducationinstitutionswereliquidated.Since27July2005theAct
“Lawonhighereducation”hasbeeninforceinPoland.meMinistryofNationalDefensehad
overlookedthefactpracticallyuntil2007.memilitaryregulationswereeithernotmodifiedat
all,orweremodifiedinsu|ciently.
