Inviewofthecapabilitiesofconstructionmachinery,weareinterestedintheme-
chanicalcharacteristicsofsoilandrockmaterialsthatdefinethelimitstate,i.e.the
stateofstressinthesoilmaterialforwhichthematerialisstable.Whenthelimit
stateisreached,stabilityislostandtheprocessofplasticdeformationofthemate-
rialbegins.Atthecriticalload,theshearstressesalongthefailuresurfacereach
theshearstrengthlimits.Thismechanismisatypicalfailuremechanismoccurring
insoilandrockexcavationprocesses[12].Examplesofdeformationmechanisms
inprocessesoftoolinteractionwithcohesivesoilareshowninFigure1.

Todate,thereisnocompletedescriptionofthesoilexcavationprocessgiving
ananswertohowtheforceonthetoolchangesandhowtheconfigurationofthe
excavatedmaterialchangesduringtheprocess.Todate,plasticitytheorysolutions
arelimitedtostaticsolutionsthatdeterminethevalueanddistributionofstresson
thestructureforagivenconfigurationandparametersofthematerial.Thistype
ofapproachintheanalysisofsoilexcavationprocessesisquitedifferentfrom
