questionwhetherandtowhatextentbothlanguageandsubjectspecialists
difierintheperceptionoftheirstudents’prospectivelinguisticcompetences.
TeresearchwascarriedoutattheUniversityofBiałystokamong
teachersoftheDepartmentofForeignLanguageswhoteachLegalEnglish
andteachersoftheFacultyofLawwhoteachtheirsubjectsinEnglish.Asan
outcomeoftheErasmusmobilityprogram,introducedin2002attheFaculty
ofLaw,therearenow77coursestaughtinforeignlanguages,54ofwhichare
conductedinEnglish,9inGerman,11inRussian,and3inSpanish,which
providedasolidbackgroundtodotheresearch.
3.Researchmethodology
3010Sample
Tesampleforthewholestudycomprised34teachersworkingattheFaculty
ofLaw,oftheUniversityofBiałystok.Teresearchwascarriedoutamong
9languagespecialistsand25subject-specialists.Forthepurposeoftheresearch,
itwasassumedthatalanguagespecialistisaninstructorteachingEnglishtolaw
students,whereasasubjectspecialistisaninstructorteachinglawinEnglish.

Tereare10teachersteachingLegalEnglish,allemployedattheDepartment
ofForeignLanguages(interdepartmentalunitoftheUniversityofBiałystok,
providingservicestoallfaculties),howeveroneoftheteachers(unfortunately
averyexperiencedone)withoutreasonrefusedtoparticipateintheresearch.
TelanguagespecialistsareallexperiencedteachersofGeneralEnglish
(theleastexperiencedteacherhasbeenteachingfor13yearsandthemost
experiencedfor24years).AsfarasteachingEnglishforSpecificPurposesis
concernedi.e.LegalEnglish,thespreadofexperienceiswider(from4upto
25)butteacherswithfeweryearsofexperience(4-12years)predominate.
Inthemainthelanguagespecialistshaveadegreeinappliedlinguisticsor
Englishphilology.TreeofthempossessaPhDdegreeinartsandoneof
themgraduatedbothinEnglishandinlaw.
Allofthelanguagespecialiststeachlawstudents(mostlythoseintheir
firstandsecondyearofstudies).Some(33%)alsoteachLegalEnglishtolegal
professionals(judgesandlegaladvisors)andoccasionallytotranslatorsand
academics.Asidefromtheirteachingactivities,78%ofthelanguagespecialists
