TheLearners’DictionaryofPublicHealthterminologyhasbeendevelopedaspartofaEu-
ropeanprojecttitledSpecialistEnglishforEuropeanPublicHealthbyaninternationalteam
ofexpertsfromPoland,Lithuania,theUnitedKingdomandHolland.
DefinitionsofEnglishlanguageterms,conceptsandexpressionscommonlyusedinthe
multidisciplinarypracticeofPublicHealthhavebeenclarifiedandwherepossiblesimplified
tofacilitateEnglishLanguagelearningforstudentsstudyinginthisrapidlygrowingdisci-
pline.Languagetermshavebeenorganisedintothesevenmaindomainsofpublichealth
namely:epidemiologyandbiostatistics,environmentalhealthandoccupationalhealth,health
promotion,healthpolicyandmanagement,ethicsandlaw,aswellaseconomicsandfinance.
ThemainintendedusersoftheglossaryincludestudentsofPublicHealth,PublicHealth
researchersandlecturers,teachersofspecialistEnglish,professionalsandpractitioners,who
oftenworkininternationalinstitutions,translatorsworkingfortheEUandotherinternational
institutions,whoshouldtakeintoaccountthecontextofPublicHealthintheirwork.
Themainstrengthoftheapproachtakentoproducethisglossaryisthecloseandon-
goingcollaborationbetweenarangeofPublicHealthspecialistsfromdifferentdomainsin
publichealthandteachersofEnglish.Thishasfacilitatedacloseintegrationofspecialised
contentwithstate-of-the-arttheoryandmethodologyofteachingEnglish.
Thedevelopmentofthedictionarywasdividedintofivestages.Instageone,tenrepre-
sentativescientificarticleswerecollected,fromeachofthesevendomainsofPublicHealth.
Thesewerereviewedbypublichealthspecialists,studentsandpractitionersfromeachdo-
main.Thetaskwastohighlightthetermswhich,intheiropinion,weretypicaloforrelated
toagivendomain.Atthesametime,scientificinformationspecialistsreviewedandcol-
lectedexistingdictionaries,glossariesandothersourcesrepresentingtheseareas,including
thetermslistedintheMedicalSubjectHeadings(MeSH)thesaurus.Definitionsofselected
termswerethenformulatedintoglossariesinthemainthematicordomaingroups:epidemi-
ology,biostatisticsandenvironmentalhealth,healthpolicyandmanagement,healthpromo-
tion,ethicsandlawaswellas,economicsandfinance.
Instagetwo,expertsrepresentingindividualdisciplinesfromeachofthecountries,re-
viewedtheglossaryentriesinthemasterglossaryandallocatedthemtoeachoftheseven
domains.ThisallowedtheMasterGlossarytobedividedintosevendomainspecificglos-
sariestofacilitateEnglishLanguageteachingandlearning
