ThedominantgroupofpatientsinthebeginningoftheHIVepidemicatthePPLinWarsawin1990-
2004weretheintravenousdrugusers,whoaccountedfor1,853cases(37.5%).Between2005and2014,
therewasanincreaseinHIVinfectionsamongMSM.Thisrouteoftransmissionwasreportedin1,621cases
(32.7%ofallPPLHIV-infectedpatients).Between2000and2014,therewasaslowbutcontinuousincrease
inthenumberofinfectionsamongheterosexualindividualswith1,003newpatients(20.3%),andasmall
increaseinthebisexualgroupwith176newpatients(3.5%).
Occasionalcasesofparenteraltransmissionwerereportedduringtransfusionofblood-related
productsbefore1987(i.e.,beforetheintroductionofstandarddiagnosticHIVtestsattheblooddonation
stationsthroughoutPoland).Verticalinfectionswerediagnosedin39patients(0.8%).Only258(5.2%)
individualswereunableordidnotwanttoreporttherouteofinfection.

AIDS-relateddeathshavebeenreportedatthePPLsince1994.Atthattime,thedeathratewas3.4%.In
thefollowingyears,especiallysince2002,whencombinationantiretroviraltherapyhasalreadybeenused,
asystematicdeclinehasbeenobservedinthedeathrates.In2012,thepercentagedroppedto0.1%.
