Since2001,areversalofcertaintrendsintheHIVepidemichasbeenobserved.Thenumberofinfected
heterosexualindividualshasbeenincreasing,whilethenumberofpeopleinfectedthroughthe
intravenousdrugusehasbeendeclining.Inrecentyears,inWesternEuropeaswellasatthePPLin
Warsaw,thenumberofnewinfectionsamongMSMmenhasbeengrowingalarmingly,asindicatedbythe
internalPPLdata,reportsfromthePZH,aswellasUNAIDSdatafrom2014(Rosińska,Janiec,Niedźwiedzka-
Stadnik,2013).
Itisestimatedthat50%ofpeopleinfectedwithHIVinPolandarenotawareoftheirinfection,whichis
themainsourceoftheongoingepidemic.ThefactthatHIVinfectioninPolandmainlyaffectsyoungpeople
enteringsexlifeandstartingafamilyisalsodisturbing.
ConsistentwiththecurrentUNAIDSpolicy,until2020,90%ofallpeoplelivingwithHIVshouldbeaware
oftheirserologicstatus.Furthermore,90%ofallpeoplewithrecognizedHIVinfectionwillbereceiving
ARV,and90%ofallpeopletakingthemedicationwillfullybenefitfromit(UNAIDS,2014).
Theseambitiousplansrequireasignificantincreaseinfundingthepreventionmethods,earlydiagnosis
aswellastreatment.Thispostulatesaveryseriouschallengeforthehealthcaresystem.
