Summary
WładysławBroniewski’spoetryhasusuallybeeninterpretedinclosecon-
nectionwiththeauthor’sexperiences.Hispoemshaveoftenbeentreatedasa
uniquelyricdiary,whichrecordsorcommentsonhistoricalevents.Theway
thehistoryistold,however,isratherpeculiar.
TheauthorofTroskaipieśń(SadnessandSong)wasinthehabitofprepar-
inghispoemsverycarefullybeforesubmittingthemforprint.Withthesame
careheworkedonthefinalarrangementofallhisvolumesofverse.Theonly
casewhereheacceptedthe“natural”chronologicalorderingwasacollection
ofeightpoems(althoughthereshouldhavebeennineofthem)includedin
hisfirstwarvolumeBagnetnabroń(BayonetOn).Still,thechronological
andapparentlynaturalarrangementturnsouttobemuchmoreparadoxi-
calthananyinventedone,becausesuccessivepoemscontradicteachother
tothepointthattheirjuxtapositionmightappearaseriouscompositional
error:thetitlepoemBagnetnabroń(BayonetOn),whichendswithafirm
declarationandcommitmentnottosurrender,isfollowedbyŻołnierzpol-
ski(ThePolishSoldier),presentingasoldierreturningfromGermancaptiv-
ity.Theprotagonistsandspeakersofthenextpoemsareaprisonerandsol-
diers-wanderers,thatisformerprisoners.Paradoxically-sincethisisthe
poet’sviewofhistory-theprotagonistsofBroniewski’spoems,foreverun-
reconciledwiththeinjusticeoftheworld,remainpermanentlyunresocializ-
able-theydonotreallyenjoyregainedfreedombutimmediatelyputthem-
selvesintotroubleagain.
