whichallowscapitaliststoreturntothe19th-centurymodelsof
workers’exploitation?Giventhehighlevelofaccumulationofcapital
andtheperspectiveofmostjobsbeingtakenbyrobots,canwesay
thatthecurrentmodelofcapitalismisexhaustedandifso,what
systemwillreplaceit?Wehopedtofindanswerstothisandsimilar
questionsoratleastclarifythemduringthisevent,andourhopes
werenotinvain.Onceagain,wewereprivilegedtohostanumber

lowingthetitleofSigmundFreud’sfamouspaperInstinctsandTeir
Vicissitudes(1915),andsomeofthemostinterestinginsightsfrom
thepreviousevents,theconferencewasanattempttorethinkthe
categoriesofalectsandemotionsintheageoftechnology.Weal-
readyknewthattheconceptofalectgainedmuchcurrencyinrecent
decades,asdemonstratedbytheworkofauthorssuchasLaurenBer-
lant,EvaIllouz,BrianMassumi,DominicPettman,ColetteSoler,
andSherryTurkle.Authorsconcernedwithalectdrawattentionto
itsconnectiontobothnature(body)andculture(politics,economy,
andtechnology).Forexample,Illouzclaimsthatthedevelopment
ofcapitalismgoeshandinhandwiththeemergenceofahighly
specializedemotionalculture:emotionalcapitalism.Didwewant
tointerrogatethemanifestationsofthisphenomenonandtherela-
tionshipbetweenemotionsandtechnology(andespeciallydigital
technologies)?WewishedtofindoutifitistruethattheInternetand
