Tewidespectrumofproblemsrelatedtoandcomprisingtheconceptand
phenomenonofmigration,aswellastheinterdisciplinarynatureofthismono-
graph,makeitpartofthecurrenttrendofmigrantologyresearch.Itisworthem-
phasizingthatreflectionsonmigrationcanonlybemeaningfulifthesubjectis
consideredbyexpertsrepresentingavarietyofdisciplines;notonlydemographers,
historians,sociologists,butalsoculturalgeographers,socialanthropologists,liter-
aryscholarsandmanyotherspecialists1.Moreover,whilerecentlytherehasbeen
atendencytoexaminemigrationphenomenafromaninterdisciplinaryangle,the
focusofthestudieshasprimarilybeenthesocialcausesofmigrationandtheir
demographicandeconomicconsequences.Teculturalimplicationshavebeen
lesscommon.Formostoftheauthorsofthetextsincludedinthismonograph,
however,itispreciselythesetypesofconsequencesofmigrationthatconstitutethe
startingpointoreventhemainfieldofconsideration.
Itshouldbenotedthatinthegeneralscholarlydiscussion,themostfrequently
signaledproblemcontinuestobetheinsufcientlyexaminedculturalimplications
ofmigration.Tisisbecausetheyusuallyappearoccasionallyand/oralongwith
apostulateformoreextensiveresearch.Tesituationissimilar,ifnotlesspositive,
inthefieldofSlavicstudies,inwhichmigrationsarenotedanddescribed,but
theirculturalandsocialdimensionislessofenanalyzed.Meanwhile,thisaspect
isjustasimportant-ifnotmoreimportant-thantheotherfacets,asitshould
beassociatedwiththebasiccategoriesofculture,encompassingallhumanactiv-
ity,namely,thecultureofexistence,socialculture,andsymbolicculture2.Itisthe
changesinthesphereofculture-spurredbywanderingand,especially,collective
displacement-thatreflectapermanentfeatureofhumanity,thatis,theabilityto
seekandadapt,tomovebeyondortranscendrecognizedandfamiliarpatternsand
axionormativeframeworks.

verybroadlybytheauthorsofthetextsinthismonograph;itislinkedtodiverse
actsoftransition,displacement,transfer,crossing,transgression,departure,aban-
donmentorwithdrawal.Tisbroadrangeofmeaningscoverstheactivityofcom-
munitiesandindividuals,bothintheliteralphysicalsenseandthepsychological,
