isstillbeingfollowedbyinstitutionstrainingprospectivelanguageteachers.
Withregardtothelengthofinitiallanguageteachertraining,onemay
alsoobservediferencesacrossEuropeancountries.Komorowska(2011:14)
makesthepointthatitwasasearlyasthe1970sthateducatorsnoticedthat
thetimedevotedtoinitialteachertrainingwasinsufcient.Terefore,it
wasextendedfirstinMalta,IcelandandGermanyandin1980sinSweden,
BelgiumandSlovenia.Tesamestepsweretakeninthe1990sinNorway,
FranceandLatvia.Whenlanguageteachereducationstartedtobeofered
atanon-universitylevel(e.g.inteachertrainingcolleges),studentswere
alsooferedmorecontacthourswithintheprofessionalcomponentoftheir
study.TisprocesshappenedfirstinDenmarkandMaltatobetakenup
bytheNetherlands,France,Sweden,andtheCentralandEasternEurope
countries.
TegeneraltrendintheEuropeancountriesistooferprofessionaltrain-
ingforfuturepre-primaryteacherswhichamountstoatleast25%ofthe
wholeteachingprogramme(itisparticularlyhighinSpainandHungary).For
prospectiveprimaryschoollanguageteachers,professionaltrainingamounts
toatleastathirdofthewholeprogrammewhileforthelowersecondarylevel
itisusuallyabove20%(particularlyhighinIcelandandBelgium,especially
theFrenchCommunity).Onthewhole,thereisatendencytokeepthetime
devotedtoprofessionaltrainingataround20%forfutureteachersatupper
secondarylevel.
Animportantaspectofinitiallanguageteachereducationispractical
training.Itisworthdrawingattentiontothefactthatinthemajorityofthe
Europeancountriespracticaltrainingwithplacementinschoolsislonger
forteachersatlowerlevelsofeducation.Afewweekstrainingisgenerally
supervisedbyamentor(usuallyateacherintheschool)andaccompaniedby
periodicassessmentbyeducatorsattheinitialteachereducationinstitution.
Tereisenormouscross-countryvariationbetweentheminimumlength
ofin-schoolplacement.Itrangesfrom1065hoursateachlevelintheUK
toonly20hoursinCroatia.Polandwith112.5hourscanbeplacedinthemid-
dlebetweencountriessuchasLatvia(900hours)andRussia(78hours).
