Recentresearchonthephoneticdevelopmentofproto-Slavicleadsonetotheconclusionthat
thephoneticstructureoftheword,whichwaspartoftheBalto-Slavicheritage,underwentsignifi-
cantrestructuringresultingfromastringofinterlacedprocessessuchas(1)lossofvowellength
distinctions,(2)monophthongizationofdiphthongs,(3)emergingofnasalizedvowels,(4)lossof
glides,(5)palatalassimilationbefore/j/andfrontvowels,(6)atendencytoopensyllablesandits
ramifications(simplificationofconsonantclustersanddisappearanceofconsonantsinword-final
position.
Thearrayofchanges,asobservedinproto-Slavic,havealsobeenattestedintheevolutionofthe
Romancegroup.SincetheRomancechangestookplaceearlierandarewelldocumented,theycanbe
usedtodeterminetheorderofandtherationalebehindtheparallelprocessesinproto-Slavic.
