Tethreestrategiesoutlinedaboveshouldnot,however,obscurethefactthat
theCentralAsianrepublicsareactivelyengagingthegreatpowersbyrelyingon
theirsovereignprerogativesandpursuingtheirownstrategicgoals.Tisfurther
weakensthenotionofanewGreatGame.Ifanything,theCentralAsianstatesdo
havepreferences,goals,aimsandstrategies,too,aswellasinterestsanddisinter-
ests,politicalallegiances,regionalbalancesofloyaltiesandalignments.TeUShas
beenexpelledmilitarilyfromtheregion,bothfromUzbekistanandKyrgyzstan,
inrecentyears,buthasbeenkeptasasecuritypartnerandproviderofweapons.
Russia’sinfluencehasbeendilutedovertheyearsbywelcomingChinaasanim-
portantplayerwhichhaspreventeditfromestablishingacoherenthegemonicbloc
intheregion.Turkmenistan’sandUzbekistan’sreluctancetojoinRussia-ledmul-
tilateralformatsisacaseinpoint.Concernsabouttheimportanceofinternation-
allawandterritorialintegrityrepeatedlyvoicedininternationalforaafterRussia’s
interventioninUkrainehavealsofoundmoreprominenceinCentralAsiancoun-
tries’foreignpolicydiscourses.WithrespecttoChina,itseconomicinterestsin
theregionhavebeenalignedwiththoseoftheeliteandtherulingcadresinCen-
tralAsia,thusprovingonceagainthattheCentralAsianrepublicsarenotpassive
observersintheredefinitionoftheregionalcontextbutratheractiveprotagonists.
