Abstract
Researchonfaceisundergoingamoveawayfromfacebeingviewedasanindividualconstruct
toamoreinteractionaloneundertheinfluenceofdiscursiveapproachestopoliteness.Inthis
framework,ithasbeenarguedthatlikepoliteness,faceisaninteractionalphenomenonand
shouldbeexploredassuch(see,e.g.,Arundale,2010;Haugh,2010;O’Driscoll,2011a).
However,faceandpolitenessaredifferentkindsofconcepts,theunderstandingofwhich
probablynecessitatesdifferentframeworks.Untanglingfacefrom(im)politenessinresearch
is,tomymind,anecessaryfirststepbecauseiffaceandpolitenessareresearchedindepend-
ently,wemaybeabletounderstandtheirmeaningsbetterandseetheirpossibleconnections
withfresheyes(see,e.g.,Haugh&Bargiela-Chiappini,2010;O’Driscoll,2011b;Haugh,2013).
DrawingondatafromGreek,Iwilltrytosubstantiatemycontentionsthat:
faceisarelationalphenomenonbutnotnecessarilyaninteractionalone;
itmakessensetotalkaboutfaceasanindividualpossession(withgrouprepercussions),and
asapre-existing(thoughnotstatic)entitywithenduringaspects;
theassociationbetweenfaceandpolitenessmaynotbeasstrongashasbeenassumed.
1.Introduction
Foryears,theconceptoffacehasplayedacentralroleinexplainingpolite-
nessandimpolitenessphenomena.Amongotherconsequences,thisconfluence
hasledtoattemptsatanalysingfaceintermsofframeworksthathavebeen
