Introduction
Polishpre-1989collectivememoryasrepresentedinthepublicsphereseemed
quitemonolithic.Itwasonlyinthe1990sthattheinterestinthememory
discoursesoftheminoritygroupsincreased.BarbaraSzacka(1990,2000),in-
spiredbytheworkofNinaAssorodobraj(1965),startedresearchingthetopic.
Severalresearchprojectswerelaunched;forexample,PolishContemporary
SocietyandthePast,whichbroughtaboutanumberofpublicationsraising
theoreticalissuesintheconceptofcollectivememory(Szacka2000andGolka
2009),reviewingthestateoftheart(Szpociński,Kwiatkowski2006),andpre-
sentingtheresultsofempiricalresearch(Kwiatkowski2008,Szpociński2009).
MarcinKula(2002,2004)takesaperspectiveofsocialhistoryandinvesti-
gatesthedifficultmemoryofthePolish-Jewishrelations.deinternational
projectModiMemorandiledbyRobertTraba(2012)describesselectedPolish
andGermanplacesofmemory(lieuxdemémoire).dissubjectmatterisalso
investigatedfromapoliticalscienceperspectivebyMarcinZaborski(2011),
whileAnnaWolff-Powęska(2011)analysestheguiltandmemorydiscourses
inGermany.AcomparativePolish–Frenchperspectiveonrepresentingthe
HolocaustisthesubjectmatterofaseriesofarticleseditedbyEngelkinget
al.(2006).JacekNowak(2011)investigatesthetransformationsofmemory
inUkraine.deEuropeannetworkMemoryandSolidarityaimsatfacilitat-
ingthedialoguebetweenthediscoursesofmemoryinEasternandWestern
Europe.
Withsuchabundanceofresearchintomemoryitisimportanttoanswer
aquestion:whatwillthepresentpublicationcontributetothisburgeoning
researchdiscipline?debookconsistsofarticlesdevotedtotheissueofshap-
ingcollectivememoryaboutthetraumaticeventsinthepast.Itfocuseson
museumsandmemorialsitesintheformerconcentrationcampsandextermi-
nationcampsandtheirroleinconstructingtherepresentationsofthedifficult
