beenemployeesoftheMinistryofForeignAffairs,orelseindividualsdealingwith
thepracticeofforeignpolicy,weareassuredoftheunparalleledreliabilityofthe
textsrelatingto"realpolicy”,asopposedtoaccompanyingcommentorspecula-
tion.AfurthermajorplusoftheYearbookisthatitalsohasanEnglish-language
version,towhichforeignreadersmaythereforebereferred.Astheauthorwason
theYearbook’seditorialboardfromtheoutset,andwaslateritseditor-in-chief,he
hasfullcondenceinthepublication,sreliability.
Othersourceshavenotbeenselectedinanyparticularlysystematicway,the
aimbeinglesstodocumentthefactsofthecase,andmoretodrawthereader,s
attentiontopublicationsorreportstheauthorseesasworthincludinginthegiven
context(inasmuchastheyexpandknowledgesignicantlyorofferanalternative
vieworinterpretationofwhathasbeenincluded).Theauthorisundernoillusions
astoweaknessesandshortfallsinthetextthatmayarisefromhishavingadopted
suchaconvention.Thehasteinwhichhehasbeenworkingwillnothavehelped
either.Nevertheless,itisclearthattheThirdRepublic,sforeignpolicywillonly
havebeendepictedmorefullyandrichlywhenwehaveatourdisposalanumberof
publicationsdifferingintermsofbothmethodsadoptedandauctorialstandpoint.
