1955,hewasofferedtheChairofEgyptologyatCambridgeandheldituntilhisretire-
ment.LikedandrespectedbymembersoftheCopticChurchhierarchyinEgypt,he
wasalsoheldingreataffectionbyhisstudents,fromBritainandabroad,andaregu-
larstreamcamefromEgyptandSudantoworkwithhim.Oneofhisimportantschol-
arlyvenueswastheworkonBiblicaltexts;indeed,until1987heservedasChairman
oftheBritishCommitteeoftheInternationalCriticalGreekNewTestamentProject.
DuringthetimeoftheNubianSafeguardingCampaign,hewasinvitedbytheBritish
ExplorationSocietytocarryoutexcavationsinoneofthemostimportantsitesin
Nubia,thefortresscityofQasrIbrim.Hedirectedfieldworkthereforsevenseasons,in
1963-1978.Therefollowedastreamofpublicationsofthericharchaeologicalmate-
rialfromtheexcavations,including"TheScrollsofBishopTimotheos";twodocu-
mentsfrommedievalNubia(1975)and,withGeraldM.Browne(OldNubianTexts
fromQasrIbrim"in1987),aswellasnumerousarticlesdealingwithChristianin-
scriptionsofallkinds.
PlumleyvisitedPolandrepeatedly.HewasoneofthefoundersoftheInterna-
tionalSocietyofNubianStudies,establishedinWarsawin1972,andtookoverthe
postofPresidentoftheSocietyafterthedeathofitsfirstPresident,ProfessorKazimierz
Michałowski,withwhomhehadhadaclosefriendship.In1982,hewaselectedPa-
tronoftheSocietyinrecognitionofhisaccomplishmentsinthefieldofancientand
medievalNubianstudies.Itwasinthisfieldthatourcontactswereparticularlylively
and,underanagreementwithWarsawUniversitCenterofArchaeology,Polish
scholarsofChristianNubiarepeatedlyhadtheopportunityandpleasuretopartici-
pateintheworkoftheEgyptExplorationSocietyexpeditiontoQasrIbrim,finding
ProfessorPlumleytobeamanofimmenseknowledge,yetmodest,straightforward,
tactfulandpossessingagreatsenseofhumor.Hisdeathisagreatlosstotheentire
Egyptologicalcommunity,includingPolishscholars,forwhomtheProfessorshouseat
Cambridgewasalwaysopenandwhocouldalwayscountonhishelpandadvisein
mattersnotonlyofascholarlynature.Hewillremaininourmindsaparadigmofa
reliablescholar,anexcellentorganizeroffieldwork,arighteousandgood-hearted
man.
