WithencouragementfromProf.Dr.A.Klasens.Dr.VanMoorselturnedhisatten-
tiontowallpainting,whichtheDutchexpeditionhaduncoveredinthechurchat
Abdallahn-IrqiinthePachorasdiocese.ThusstartedalifetimefascinationwithNubian
andCopticpainting,followedbydeepinvolvementinthedevelopmentofthenew
disciplineofNubianstudies.In1974-78,heundertookacomprehensivestudyofthe
paintingsinthemonasteryofSt.JeremiahatSaqqara.In1981,hebegananassocia-
tionwiththeIFAOinCairo,headingaprogram,beganbyJulesLeroy,forthedocu-
mentationandpublicationofwallpaintingsfromthemedievalEgyptianchurches.An
effectofthisassociationwasthebook"LemonastredeSaint-Antoine",publishedby
theIFAOinCairoin1991.Init,vanMoorseldevotedagreatdealofattentiontothe
newlydiscoveredmuralsinthemonasticchurchesinWadin-Natroon:Deirel-
Baramous,DeirAmbaBishoyandDeires-Sourian,particularlythatmostsplendid
piece–TheAnnunciationwiththeFourProphets–revealedinthewesternconchof
thealAdrachurchinDeires-Sourian.
PaulvanMoorselalsopresidedoverworkontheiconsfromtheCairoCoptic
MuseumcollectionandfromCopticchurches.Thestudywaspublishedin1996.
HisaccomplishmentsinthefieldofresearchonNubianandCopticpaintingsand
inspreadingknowledgeabouttheresultsofthisresearcharehardlytobeoveresti-
mated.
Inhisscholarlywork,PaulvanMoorselalwayssetstorebycooperationwiththe
monasticcircles,whichthechurcheswithmedievalmuralsbelongto.Hewasalways
activelyorganizingseminarsandcoursesofallkinds.
PaulvanMoorselhasleftmanyfriends.Itwasaprivilegetohavebeenoneof
them.
