PaulvanMoorsel,ProfessorEmeritusofEarlyChristianArtinLeidenUniversity,
eminentexpertonCopticandNubianwallpainting,passedawaysuddenlyonJune1.
Formanyyears,hehadservedasSecretaryoftheInternationalSocietyofNubian
Studies.Inthiscapacityandnotonly,hewasassociatedwithProfessorKazimierz
Michałowski,theCenterofMediterraneanArchaeologyofWarsawUniversity,the
NationalMuseuminWarsaw.HewasafrequentguestinPoland,givinglecturesand
participatinginsymposia,comingtostudytheParasmurals,butalsosimplytoex-
presshisdeepsympathyforourcountry.Throughhiseffortshisstudentsandassoci-
atestookpartinPolishexplorationsconductedinSudan.Hewasindeedagreatfriend.
DuringhisstudiesatRCTheologicalSeminaryinWarmondandlateratLeidenand
intheGregorianUniversityinRome,hewasinterestedintheEarlyChristianarts,
especiallysarcophagiandwallpaintingsfromthecatacombs.Hisdoctoralthesis,pub-
