onemustassumethatthisparticular
lamptypewasalocal/regionalproduct
(Kucharczyk2005a:56-57).
Afewothertypesoflampshavebeen
evidenced,forexample,lampswithsolid
orhollowroundedstems,lampswithvery
thinandfragilestems,conicallampsand
tumbler-shapedlampswithacharacteristic
folded-outrimandsmallhandles.
Stemmedgoblets,alsocalled‘wine-
glasses’owingtotheirmodernshape,
wereoneofthemainproductsofthelate
Roman/Byzantineglassindustry(Stern
2001:270-271).Arangeofdiferenttypes
ofgobletshasbeenrecovered:withsolid
stemandfire-roundededges[Fig.9:2]
orwithhollowstemsandtubularedges
[Fig.9:4].Atypewherethecupitself
beginswithafoldedcollar[Fig.9:3]was
recordedonceagain.Itisattestedbothin
MareaandinAlexandria,butnowhereelse
eitherinoroutsideEgypt(Kucharczyk
2005a:58,Figs2,3;Rodziewicz1984:
240,Fig.262,Pl.73,No.372;Babraj,
Szymańskaetalii2013:67,Fig.8e).
Stemmedgobletswereusedasdrinking
vesselsandasoillamps,dependingon
whatwasrequired.However,asnotwo-
leggedcopperwickholderhasbeenfound
unlikeatothersitestheusageof
particularfindscannotbeascertained.It
isonlylogical,however,toassumethat
doublefunctionwasnotpossibleandthat
vesselswereintendedandusedforeither
oneortheotherpurpose.
Domesticglassware,suchasbowls,
beakers,platesordishes,bottles,jars,
smallerflasksorbottles,wasfoundonly
inlimitednumbers[Fig.9:5,6,8].Of
interestisabottleofblueglasswith
applieddecorationintheformofathick
coil[Fig.9:7].Coloredglasslikethisis
seldomfoundinthemostlybluish-green
orgreenassemblagefromMarea.
Averysmallfragmentofavessel
withbrownishredpainteddecoration
[Fig.9:9]correspondedtoshardswith
similardecorationalreadyfoundatthesite
inpreviousyears(Kucharczyk2008:131).
Asinglefragmentofwindowpaneof
theflatcirculartypewasrecovered.Te
excavationsinthebasilicahaveyielded
onlyafewfragmentsofwindowglass,
whichisgenerallyastonishinginviewof
themorethan120fragmentsofwindow
panes
attestedfromthenearbybath
complexexcavatedbythePolishmission
(Kucharczyk2008:134-136).Inabasilica
ofthissizeonewouldexpectasmany
windowpanesasatothersites.Teywere
needednotonlytoletindaylight,butalso
tokeepoutsand,windandrain.
Tesseraemadeofglass[Fig.9:10]were
alsodiscoveredinverysmallnumbers,as
wasasinglenecklacebeadmadeofgreen
glass[Fig.9:11].
Someratherbigchunksofglassslag
canbeconsideredasfurtherevidenceof
theexistenceofglassworkshopsinMarea
(Kucharczyk2008:129).
