ingandmanydetailsthatconstitutedthecontent
oftheoriginalcompositionhavebeendestroyedlIn
themeagredescriptionsofthemonumentmadeso
far,themainpaintinghasbeenwronglyinterpret-
edtoillustrateAscension,insteadofResurrectionl
Thereareseveralreasonsforthisrecurrentmistakel
Beforethewar,afigureofChirstTriumphantwith
abannerandstandingonaspherethatsymbol-
izedtheEarthwasplacedonthetopofthemiddle
partoftheepitaphlThefigureofChristwasac-
companiedbytwoangelsstandingonthetopsof
theepitaph)ssidepartslThepaintinginthelower
rightpartoftheepitaphmostprobablydepicts
Jonahsteppingoutfrombetweenthejawsofthe
fishthatswallowedhimlThisscenefromtheOld
TestamentcorrespondswiththesceneofResurrec-

sceneofAscension,inalllikelihood,insteadofthe
guardsthepainterwouldhavepaintedthedisciples
ofChristfollowingtheirMasterbeingtakenupto
thehouseofFatherwiththeireyesl
Theepitaphhasretaineditsarchitectonicchar-
acter;ithasthreeaxes,onestoreywithapedestal
andanepitaphcrownlMostpaintingsarerectangu-
larandthemainpaintingisframedbytwopairsof
DoriccolumnsoneachsidelThecolumnshavepol-
ishedshaftswithmascaronsandcabochondecora-
tionsattheirbaseslOnthecartouchesbetweenthe

Itishighlyprobablethatthesculpturesofthe
epitaphhavebeeneitherdamagedorputinaplace
notyetdiscoveredbyresearchers,whichispossible
asthemonumenthasnotbeenextensivelystud-
iedlLiquidatingtheinscriptionplaque,however,
seemstobeadeliberateact,sinceatthattimeGer-
manwritingswereusuallyassociatedwiththewar
andthememoryofthosetragiceventslInthisway,
amonumentthatcommemoratedaparticularper-
sonisgenerallydeemedtobenamelesslThestoryof
FaustusKnigge)sepitaphcorrespondswiththatof
theepitaphsofthevonPlatenfamilyfromRarwinol
Rarwino(GermanRafin)isavillageregistered
inthemedievaltimes;thenamewasfirstdocu-
