In1719,duringtheweddingceremonyofFriedrichAugusttheStrongofSaxony
andMaryJosephineofHabsburg,amongtheexceptionalobjectsthatwereto
demonstratethegloryandmightofthedynasty,therewasaparadearmourmanu-
factured150yearsearlierfortheSwedishkingErictheXIV
.Teiconography
ofthisworkofEliseusLibaerts,thecarverfromMilan,isexclusivelybasedon
themythaboutHerculesworks.Wasitameredecoration?Certainlynot,asthe
themeofa“SaxonHercules”wasalsousedbyFriedrichAugustonseveralocca-
sions,aswecanseeoncommemorativemedalsdated1694,1697and1706.Her-
culesasapatronofmonarchsandkingsorprincespresentedasHercules-using
themythforpoliticalpurposesandcreatinghisownimagehashadalongtradi-
tion.TemostfamousHercules-appealingpersonalitiesaremaybetwoprinces
fromFerrara-theIandtheIIErcoled’Este.Andperhapsthemetamorphosis
ofthechivalricepic,efectedthankstoAriosto’smasterpiecetoo,enabledthis
harmoniustransition,inartandliterature,totheidealofaclassic,modernno-
bleman.Tereforethatnew-oldidealandthevisionofHercules-monarchwere
attractiveevencenturiesafterwards.
