Abstract

BuberandFranzRosenzweig(withaSpecialFocusonRosenzweig’sPoetics
ofTranslation)
MartinBuberandFranzRosenzweig’sGermantranslationoftheBibleisdoubtlessly
amasterpiece;however,asitrevealsitsartisticqualitiesonlytothosewhodonotsearch
forthem,itsbeautymaybecomparedtotheeleganceofamathematicalproof.The
articleanalysesBuberandRosenzweig’scooperativerenditionoftheBible(firstedited
in1926)againsttheJewishtraditionoftranslation,focusingonFranzRosenzweig,
sincethisJewishtheologianandtranslator(1886-1929)islessknowninPolandthan
thephilosopherMartinBuber.First,thearticledescribesRosenzweig’sthoughtas
rootedintheJewishhermeneutictradition,withitsessentialnotionslikemidrash,and
discusseshiscontributiontothedevelopmentandsystematizationofthattradition.
Next,itpresentsRosenzweig’stranslatoryworkaswellastheprinciplesofBuber
andRosenzweig’sBibletranslation(literalness,foreignness,renewalandrepetition).
Inthesecondpart,severaltranslationproblems,e.g.propernamesandneologisms,
areexaminedcomparatively,i.e.selectedpassagesoftheBookofGenesisorExodus
takenfromBuberandRosenzweig’srenderingaresetagainsttheLutherBibleand
thePolishBibliaTysiąclecia.TheanalysishighlightsRosenzweig’scontributiontothe
newGermanBible.Thearticlecloseswithsomecommentsonthereceptionofthenew
BibleinGermany,particularlyintheinterwarperiod.
