cognitivereasons.Everylearningexperienceshouldbeseenwithinthecontext
ofhelpinglearnerstodevelopasenseofpersonalidentityandmakingstudents
awareofthefuturegoals,i.e.learningshouldbepersonalizedasfaraspossi-
ble.Inotherwords,teachersinmodernclassroomsareresponsibleforidentify-
ingtheindividuallearner’sneedsandunderstandingthewaysinwhichstu-
dentsmakesenseoftheworld.Atthesametime,inordertobecomeself-
actualizing,learnersshouldbehelpedandencouragedtomaketheirown
choicesontowhatandhowtolearn.Humanisticeducationstartswiththeidea
thateveryindividualstudentisuniqueinhisorherbehavioranditstrivesto
helpstudentsbecomemorelikethemselvesandlesslikeeachother(Hamachek
1977).
Thetraditionalunderstandingofteachingasaratherpassivetransmissionof
knowledgeorprovidingthestudentswithinformation,explaininggrammar
structuresandvocabulary,whichisstillpresentinsomelanguageteachers’
minds,todayseemstobehighlyinadequateinthecaseofcognitiveconceptof
psycholinguistics.Languageacquisitionisrealizedinthenaturalcontextas
wellasintheeducationalcontext,mainlythroughtheprocessoflanguage
communication.Thefactthatthelanguageacquisitionhappensinformalcon-
ditionsdoesnotmakeitanartificialprocessbutonlycultivated.Cultivation
meanstakingcareof,assistingandeliminatingobstaclesforthenaturaldeve-
lopment.Itsmaingoalistohelpthestudentstosurviveinaforeignlanguage
environment.Fortheteacheritmeansadoptingtheroleoftheleader,who
shouldbeunderstoodassomeonewhohasthevisionofthefuture,andwho
canconvincethegroupthatsomeactionsarenecessaryinordertoreachthe
anticipatedgoal.
Assumingsucharole,theteachershouldgainawarenessoftheglobalcha-
racteroftheenterprise,foreseethefutureactions,preciselyunderstandthe
stepswhicharenecessaryforachievingthegoalaswellastopresenttheway
he/shehadtakenbefore(Dakowska2001).Stevick(1980)believesthatitis
essentialforteacherstodevelopreflectiveawarenessbytakingintoconsidera-
tionwhatgoesinsideandbetweentheirstudents.Headvisesteacherstogetto
knowtheirstudents’psychology,treatingeachofthemasanordinaryperson,
acordial,interestedfellowhumanbeing,sincebydoingsotheywilllearn
abouttheirstudents’attitudestolearning.Thiswillallowteacherstomodify
theirteachingappropriately.Stevickalsorecognizesthatpeopleoftenlearn
bestwhentheyhavesomecontrolover,andinputinto,theirownlearning.
