influences.Tedatashowedthat:
Teprimarymotivationstoworkareinstantgratificationsuchasmoneyand
likingforthejob,thenaltruisticrewards,thentheuseofthejobtoprovide
status,and,finally,longer-termgoals,includingpensionprovision.[ł]Long-
termmotivationssuchascareerdevelopment,self-esteemandpensionsrank

Howdotheseresultscomparewithamorefocusedsampleofnoviceteachers
andtheirmotivationsforenteringthisprofession?Astudyof400noviceteachers
carriedoutbyGoldbergandProctor(2000,quotedinBartell,2005:10)indicates
thatthemotivationsherearemuchmorealtruisticandrelatetoneedsof
ahigherorder,suchasjobsatisfactionanditsimportance.Tefollowingwere
themotivesenumeratedbytheteachers:
Desiretoworkwithchildren.
Loveofsubjectmatter.
Influenceofateacher.
Beliefintheimportanceofteaching.(Goldberg&Proctor,2000:10)
Youngeretal.(2004),intheirstudyofteachertrainees,comeupwithsimilar
resultsintheirsurvey.Commentingontheresultsobtained,theysay:
Atthisstageoftheirproposedcareertraineesconstructtheircareerchoice
notintermsofcareerprogression[ł]norintermsofsalaryopportunities
[ł],butintermsofintellectualchallengeandacommitmenttotransforming
opportunitiesforchildren,bothintheclassroomandinthewidersocietal
context.Traineesarestronglymotivatedtowardsacareerinteachingandhave
sustainedthisdespitestrongdiscouragementbothfromwithinandoutside
theprofession;insodoingtheyfrequentlydrawonastronglymoralistic
positioninginordertowithstandthisdiscouragement.(Youngeretal.,2004:
