Teworkspublishedoverthelastthreedecadeshavebeendominated
byaresearchphilosophywhichcouldbedescribedasaglobalapproach.
Historiansfocustheirattentionontheaspectsofcorporatelifewhichen-
ablethemtoshowcollegesinabroadersocialcontext,asanintegralele-
mentoftheurbantissue.ItisworthrecallingthatR.MacMullenalready
includedcollegesinhisstudyonthesocialrelationsinRome.24Henoted
thatcollegesrecreatedthesocialcontextinwhichtheyfunctioned.Te
samescholarobservedthatcollegeswereaspacewheretheplebscould
satisfythoseneedswhichwereoutofthereachofthissocialclassinthe
urbancommunityasawhole.Tisthoughtbecamethestartingpointfor
manyanalyseswhoseauthorsidentifiedmechanismsofsocialcompensa-
