thefactthatforcollegesandtheirmembersthecitywasthefoundation
onwhichtheybuilttheirsocialidentity.Healsonotedthatcorporations
wereonlyoneofthefrequentlyoverlappingsocialnetworks,suchasthe
family,ethnicorprofessionalgroups,neighbours,friends,etc.Suchstate-
mentsleavenodoubtthatthediscussionaboutRomancorporationshas
beenjoinedbyhistorianswhodonothesitatetoemploytoolsprovidedby
contemporarysocialsciencesintheiranalysisofRomansocialrelations.
