fromnormativetextsandepigraphicsources.46Whileitishardtodisagree
withthisstatement,theconsequencesofthisfactcanbeappraisedinvar-
iousways.AccordingtoKornemann,itisonlylegaltextsthatońerusthe
opportunitytocorrectthevisionofRomancorporationswhichisbased
onanalysingepigraphicinscriptions.Inmyopinion,thehundredsofin-
scriptionsfoundedbycollegesandtheirmembersarethebestproofofthe
incompletenessoftheimageofthefenomenoassociativowhichnormative
sourcesimposeonus.Naturally,epigraphicsourcesalsohavetheirlimita-
tions.Tediscussionontherepresentativenessofepigraphicmaterial
goesbackalmosttotheoriginsofepigraphyitselfandhassofarnotpro-
ducedresultswhichwouldbeacceptedbyallhistorianswhostudyancient
Rome.47Here,Iwouldonlyliketopointouttheriskswhichcouldhave
particularlystronglydistortedtheresultsofstudiesonthefenomenoas-
sociativo.Someofthemareevident.Eventhemostoutstandingscholars
inthehistoryofepigraphyfacedtheriskofmisreadinganinscription,
resultingfromthenecessitytoreconstructthemissingfragmentsofthe
text.Howfar-reachingtheconsequencesofsuchmistakesmightbeisbest
illustratedbythealreadymentionedlectionofthetwelfhverseofthefa-
mousLanuviuminscription,proposedbyMommsen.Tissortofriskis,
inaway,partandparcelofepigraphicstudies,asitfollowsfromthena-
tureofthesourcematerial.Tehistoryofepigraphyislargelyahistoryof

rorsarenotthebiggestthreattothereliabilityoftheresultsofstudiesrely-
ingonepigraphicmaterialasthemainortheonlysource.Ignoringthe
