mLECZKO1965,1968;ŻUREKandDUmNICKA1989).
Incontrast,therehavebeenbutafewstudiesonrotifersoccurringinsmall
pondsandlakesoftheTatraMountains.WIERZEjSKI(1882)wasthefirsttodescribe
them;hewasfollowedbymINKIEWICZ(1914)and,inthepost-WorldWarIIperiod,
byGLIWICZ(1969),WOźNICZKA(1965),andWOźNICZKA-STARZYKOWA(1966a,b).
Moss-dwellingrotifershavenotbeenattractingmuchattentionsofar,either.
TheywerestudiedinTatramountainstreams(mADALIńSKI1961)andPAWŁOWSKI
(1938)investigatedmoss-dwellingrotifersintheMasurianLakeDistrict,theTa-
traMountainsandaroundPabianice.Moss-inhabitingrotiferswerestudiedin
differentpeatlandsofthePoleskiNationalParkandintheTatranationalPark
(BIELAńSKA-GRAjNERetal.2011a;BIELAńSKA-GRAjNERetal.2011b;BIELAńSKA-
-GRAjNERetal.2011c).
ThestudyofpsammicrotifersinPolandwaspioneeredbyWISZNIEWSKIwhose
contributiontothefieldisdescribedabove.Atpresent,psammicrotifersareat-
tractingmuchattentionagain:boththeirdistributioninvariouszonesofsandy
beachesandtherespectivecontributionsofdifferentecologicalgroupsofpsammic
rotifers(psammobionts,psammophiles,psamoxenes)totherotiferfaunaareex-
ploredinlacustrinehabitats(BIELAńSKA-GRAjNER2001;EjSmONT-KARABIN1998b,
2003,2008a,2008b;RADWANandBIELAńSKA-GRAjNER2001;RADWANetal.2003).
RotifersofastaticandlittoralhabitatswerestudiedbyKLImOWICZ(1964,
1967,1970,1972).Theinfluenceofmacrophytesonthestructureoflittoralcom-
munitiesofRotiferahasbeenstudiedbyKUCZYńSKA-KIPPEN(2005)andKUCZYńS-
KA-KIPPENandNAGENGAST(2006).
Rotifersinhabitingbrackishwaters,theBalticSeagulfsandlagoonswere
fairlythoroughlyinvestigated,bothfromthefaunisticandecologicalpointsof
view(RÓŻAńSKA1962,1963,1967;ADAmKIEWICZ-CHOjNACKA1978,1983;ADAm-
KIEWICZ-CHOjNACKAandRÓŻAńSKA1990;ADAmKIEWICZ-CHOjNACKAetal.1986;
WIKTOR1957,1958,1972,1989;WIKTORetal.1982;WIKTORandŻmIjEWSKA
1985;RADWANandADAmKIEWICZ-CHOjNACKA1989;GUTKOWSKAetal.2013).
Comparedtotheintensityofrotiferstudiesinlakesandponds,lotichabitats
-withtheexceptionoftheclassicpapersbyPAWŁOWSKI(1958,1968,1970,1973)
onRiverGrabia-havebeeninvestigatedtoamuchsmallerextent.Generally,
theloticwaterstudiescanbedividedintothoseconductedinthemajorPolish
rivers(andtheirtributaries)andinriversdischargingintolakes.
TheVistulaanditstributarieshavereceivedmostattentioninriverinerotifer
research.TheupperreachesoftheVistulaweretheareaofstudiesconductedby
BEDNARZandŻUREK(1988)andŻUREK(2000,2002).KRZECZKOWSKA-WOŁOSZYN
