Almostalltherotifersaretransparent,thereforetheirinternalorgans,fre-
quentlycoloured,arewell-visible.Inparticular,thestomachmaybecoloured
brownorgreenbythefooditcontains.Theusuallywhitestomachglandsare,in
somespecies,reddishorbrownish,thetrophibeingstainedorange-yellowor,as
inMicrocodon,purple.Mostcolourfularetheeyespots,theircolourrangingfrom
orangetodarkredtorubytoblack.

Head.Theheadshapevaries:theheadoftenconsistsoftwopartsand
carriesnumerousorgans,primarilytheso-calledciliary(wheel)apparatus(the
corona)therotatingmovementofwhichisattherootofthetaxon’sname
(Fig.5).Theheadmaybealsoequippedwithvariousprocessesbearingtufts
ofcilia,e.g.,theso-calledauriclesinNotommataandSynchaeta,therostrum
(variableinlength),andthesensorycellswithsetae-orbristle-likecilia
(Fig.6);theremayalsobeeyespots.Mostimportantisthecoronawhichis
usedforlocomotion,feeding,defence,escape,excretion,andwithin-species
recognition.Theappearanceofthecoronavariesanddependsonfeedingand
locomotoradaptations.Therotifertaxadifferwithrespecttothedevelopment
ofthecorona.Itisstronglymodifiedinadultcollothecids(Collothecidae):
theciliaarepartlyortotallyreducedandthefunnel-likemouthissurrounded
bylong,strongsetaepreventingpreyescape.Someadultfemales(Cupelopa-
gis,Acyclus,Atrochus)lackciliaandsetaewhich,however,arepresentin
