andshouldonlytakemonophyleticgroupsintoaccount,i.e.thosethathave
acommonancestor.
RotiferswereincludedintheobsoletephylumAschelminthesuntilthe1990s,
butnowtheyareclassifiedasanindependentphylum.TraditionallytheRotifera
comprisethreeclasses:theSeisonidea(bisexualectoparasites),Monogononta
(cyclicalparthenogenesisandsexualreproduction,withhaploidmales)and
Bdelloidea(onlyasexualreproduction,parthenogenetic).OriginallytheBdelloi-
deaandMonogonontawerelinkedtogetherinonegroup:Eurotatoria(mELONE
etal.1998).
WiththedevelopmentoftechniquesbasedonDNAanalysis,viewsonthepo-
sitionofrotifersinthephylogeneticanimaltreewerechanging.Originally,based
onmorphologicalcharacteristics(sperm,intracytoplasmiclamina),theRotifera
andAcanthocephalawereputtogetherinthecladeSyndermata(AHLRICHS1995a,
