cretedbyit.Thecuticleplaysaprotectivefunction:althoughdelicateandelastic,
itissturdyandresistanttoeffectsofenvironmentalfactors.Thetrunkcuticlemay
becomesubstantiallythickenedtoformaloricaintowhichtheheadandthefoot
canberetracted,ifnecessary.Theloricamaybesmooth,rough,ornamentedin
variousways,equippedwithspinesorevenwithelongatedmotileprocesses,char-
acteristicofplanktonicrotifers.Particularlyinterestinginthisrespectisthegenus
Hexarthra,representativesofwhichalwaysshowsixmotileprocessesusedto
facilitatelongleaps.Sessilerotifersoftensecreteagelatinoussheathtowhich
theysometimesattach,inintricatepatterns,foreignparticles(e.g.,Melicertasp.).
Thecuticlemaybeverythinandelasticor,conversely,thickandstiff,
particularlywhenitformsthelorica.Theloricaofnumerousspeciesdevelops
intoakindofacapsulewithaperturesfortheheadandfoot.Inotherspecies,
theloricaconsistsofseparateplates,joinedbythebodycover.Thedorsalplate
