Thetrophiconsistofhard,cuticularisedbone-likepartsandaretaxonomical-
lyimportant.Theyareusedtoseizeandgrindthefood;consequently,thetrophi
structureisrelatedtothetypeoffoodandfeedingmode.Thestructureofthetrophi
isanimportantdiagnosticcharacterusedtohelpidentifyfamilies,genera,and
frequentlythespecies.
Thetrophiconsistof7basicpieces:thesupport(fulcrum)which,together
withtworami,formstheso-calledincus;therearealsotwomanubriawhich,
togetherwithtwounci,formtwomallei(Fig.11A,B).
