Recently,aPhDdissertationbyMartaŻuchowska,asyetunpublished,hasreexamined
alltheevidence.7
BeforeworkbeganintheareaexcavatedbythePolishmission,theremainsofthreeperi-
stylecourtyardswerevisible,withsomecolumnsstillstanding.Wehavenaturallyassumedthat
theycorrespondtoasmanydistincthouses,eachtakinguptheentirewidthoftheblock.This
wasexactlywhatKrenckerandGabrielhadseennearby,afewstreetstothewest.Theexca-
vationrevealed,however,thatthestructuresadjacenttothesecourtyardsshouldnotbeconsid-
eredseparately.Instead,theyformpartofasingleresidencecoveringasurfaceofmorethan
2000m2(Fig.6).
Theblock,markedKF”onGabriel)splan(ourFig.1:21),measuresabout26mwideand
79mlong.ItisborderedbytwoparallelsidestreetsstemmingfromtheColonnade:theonein
thewestiscalledDiogenesStreet,aftertheinscriptionofFlaviusDiogenesfrom328C.E.on
thecornercolumn;theother,ChurchStreet,givesaccesstothreeChristianbasilicasfurther
along.Atadistanceof135mfromthelineoftheColonnade,thetwostreetsarelinkedby
anarrowalley.
