RemarkableaboutthebattlefieldofAzincourtisthatatthislieudemémoireolden-
mitiesseemtrulytobelongtohistory,andthattheactofremembranceisgeared
towardsperpetuatingpeacefulAnglo-Frenchrelationsinconformity,itwouldap-
pear,withtheEuropeanConstitution.Thejointactofremembranceis,perhaps,no-
wheremoreconspicuousthanatthenewCentreHistoriqueMédiévaljustoffthe
Azincourtbattlefield(andreplacingthesmallandamateurmuseumrunbylocalvol-
unteers,openedin1982).

ThoughoriginallyaFrenchinitiative,thenewmuseumistheproductofajointen-
terprisebetweenanumberofFrenchinstitutions(includingtheState,regionaland
localcouncils)andtheSouthlandsSchool,acommunitycomprehensiveschoolinNew
Romney,Kent(a.k.a.the“EtablissementscolaireSouthlands”).
Infact,thecollaborationthatledtotheerectionofthenewAzincourtmuseumwas
itselfanEUproduct:forthelocalauthoritiesinFrancetobeeligibletoaEuropean
Uniongrantinthefirstplace,theyhadtoseekapartnerfromanotherEUmember
country,andsincetheSouthlandsSchoolwasalreadyactiveinthenorthofFranceand
inAzincourt(wherepupilsfromtheschoolwould,amongotherthings,receivepracti-
calFrenchlessons),theysoonbecameaformalpartner.
Thissupranational,EuropeanstyleofcollaborationbetweentheFrenchauthorities
andaneducationalinstitutionliketheSouthlandsSchool,explainsthatwhatcould
