Itshallbehighlightedthatresearchintohousinghasbeenundertakenby
therepresentativesofvariousdisciplinesofscience.Theseresearchershave
introducedtheirowntheoreticalperspectivesandresearchinstrumentstohousing
studies,adaptingthemtothespecicityofthisresearcharea.Someresearchers
(e.g.Kemeny2004)remarkthathousingisaresearchareawhichshouldbe
analysedwiththeuseoftheoreticalandmethodologicalinstrumentsborrowed
fromotherdisciplineswithinsocialstudies.Ontheotherhand,PeterKing(2004)
emphasisestheneedtodevelopresearchideasandtheoreticalperspectives
whichwouldencompasstheissuesspecictohousing.DavidClapham(2012,
p.182)presentsanintermediarystance.Accordingtohim,housingresearchshall
developonthebasisofgeneraltheoreticalconceptsadetailedapproachto
housingproblemsoradaptgeneralperspectivestotheissuesunderanalysis.
Whatshallbenoted,though,isthefactthathousingstudiesdonothave
astatusofaseparatedisciplineofscience,eveninBritishstudies.This
situationdidnotinterruptthedevelopmentofthehousingstudiestheoryand
popularisationofthisseparateresearchareaintheAnglo-Saxonstudies.
In2012,aworkbooktostudyhousingappeared(“TheSAGEHandbookof
HousingStudies”),editedbyDavidClapham,WilliamClarkandKennethGibb.
ThemajorityoftheauthorsofindividualchaptersintheworkbookareBritishre-
searchers,yettherearealsoauthorsfromsuchcountriesastheUnitedStates,the
Netherlands,Australia,SwedenandAustria.Thebookillustratesoneofmanypossi-
bleviewsonhousingstudies.Itincludesthefollowingresearchapproaches:theNeo-
LiberalLegacytoHousingResearch,InstitutionalEconomics,SocialGeographic
InterpretationsofHousingSpaces,SocialPolicyApproachestoHousingResearch,
SocialConstructionism,StructurallyInspiredApproachesinHousingStudies,
HousingPoliticsandPoliticalScience,aswellasPeople-EnvironmentStudies.
Housingmarketsareconsideredtobethemaintheoreticalcategory,
whereastheirenvironment(context)includes:theeconomy,welfareregimes,
life-course,neighbourhoods(sociallife)andecology.Themostimportant
researchsubjectsarethefollowing:homelessness,affordablehousing,housing
subsidies,residentialsegregationandsocialhousing.
