wereartificiallybuyingsocialpeace),fromAugust’80thestate-reduced
bothbythePartyaparatusandsociety-enteredananarchisticphaseakinto
aflcabaret”.Herebasicsocialflforces”agreedtorecognizethatthereissome-
thing(asthestate)whichactuallysimplydidnotexistandcouldn’texistany
more,whichatthesametime-underadifferentstructuralandfunctional
form-isindispensablefortheorganizationofsociallife.Thisfictionbecame
acauseofstillmoreprofoundchaos.Thatfactmayalsoexplainwhypart-
nerstryingtobuildanewEducationactedatthelevelofflfunctionallyimag-
inedexistence”.
Theessentialeffectsofthegrowingcrisiswere:
1)apoliticalalienationofwidelyconsideredauthoritiesandcitizens,in-
cludingtheirmutualperceptionasopposedforces,aswellasthepolariza-
tionofbothcategoriesarounddifferentlyembodiedinterests;
2)socialanomy,reachingthestateofaflsocialvacuum”atthelevelofin-
stitutionsandlocalcirclesandenvironments-betweenthenationandpri-
marygroups,aswellasincreaseofprimarygroupresistanceagainstthe
state,particularlywithinafamily;
3)deprivationofpersonality-violationofcapacities,constitutiveforan
individual’sself-regulativepower,togeneratepersonalvisionsaswellas
thoseloosingtheirparticularity.
TheessentialeffectsoftheAugustupheaval(specifictothisoscillationof
thesysteminPoland,asopposedtothoseoftheyears1956,1968,1970,
1976),immediatelyfollowedupbywavesofsocialtension,maybecharac-
terizedasrapidjumpsinthecapacityofbasicsocialclassesconcerningthe
articulationoftheirownaspirationsandvalues,intheirabilitytodefine
theirpositionwithinawidesocialscaleandtoorganizesocialaspirations
towardssubjectivity,aswellasintheircapacitytodeterminethenatureof
themechanismsofthedevelopmentofthestate.
Whatvalueshavebeenexpressedandarticulatedbytherenewalmove-
ment(whichshouldn’tbeidentifiedatallwithflSolidarity”)?Piotr
Sztompkahascalledthesevaluesfltherenewaldecalogue”.Theyconsistof:
justiceandequality,truthandabidingbythelaw,rationalityanddiscipline,
democracyandrepresentation(basedonpluralism),creativityanddignity.
Thesevaluesarethenintegratedbythemostuniversalone:patriotism.
Withinthisflrenewaldecalogue”whatismissingisWORKasvalue.
Peoplehavecometotheconclusionthatitistheauthoritieswhospeakin
theirname,organizetheirwork,manageitseconomiceffects-thatwere
violatinglawandorder,cheatingthemandwastingtheeffortofthewhole
nationwithwrongdecisionsandincompetentmanagementandgreedily
